What activated carbon actually filters out
Activated carbon is just carbon that’s been processed to be full of microscopic pores, which gives it an enormous surface area for its size. Water passes through, and the carbon adsorbs chlorine, some pesticides, and the compounds that make tap water taste like a public pool. That’s the whole mechanism behind every pitcher in a breakroom fridge, and it’s genuinely good at the taste-and-odor job — that’s not marketing, it’s chemistry.
Where carbon runs out of road is dissolved minerals and salts. It doesn’t meaningfully reduce total dissolved solids, fluoride, or arsenic, and it won’t touch sodium. NSF certification is the actual differentiator
Every carbon filter reduces chlorine taste — that part’s table stakes. What separates a $10 filter from a $20 one is whether it’s been independently certified against a specific contaminant list, usually by NSF or WQA. Brita’s Elite line and PUR’s Plus filters both carry that certification for lead reduction, which the base Brita Standard filter doesn’t claim. If lead is a real concern for your building — older plumbing, a municipal notice, whatever prompted someone to Slack you about this in the first place — buy the certified filter, not the cheaper sibling that looks identical on the shelf.
Filter life is the hidden cost, not the sticker price
A $15 pitcher that needs a new filter every 40 gallons costs more over a year than a $25 pitcher whose filter lasts 120 gallons — do the math on how much water your office actually goes through before comparing sticker prices. Pitcher vs. dispenser vs. cooler filter
For a team of two to six people, a pitcher is genuinely enough — nobody’s queuing for water. Once you’re past that headcount, the math shifts toward a large dispenser like the Brita 27-Cup, which cuts refill trips without the plumbing commitment of a bottled or bottleless cooler. What I’d skip
I wouldn’t buy a carbon pitcher and call it a lead-abatement plan if there’s an actual documented lead problem — that’s a job for certified filtration and possibly a plumber, not a $20 Amazon pitcher. And I wouldn’t upsell carbon filtration as a fluoride or arsenic solution, because it isn’t one; if that’s the actual concern, an ion-exchange or RO system is the honest answer, not a bigger carbon cartridge.

I worked from the manufacturer listing copy and description text for each product — capacity, filter life in gallons, and whatever certification claims Amazon’s own product pages state. I did not run water through any of these, I don’t own a TDS meter, and I haven’t measured contaminant removal myself. Where a brand claims NSF or WQA certification, I’ve noted it as their claim; I didn’t independently verify the certificate.
