What “dual monitor” actually demands from a converter
A standing desk converter that claims to handle two monitors needs to win on two specs that most buyers skip past: platform width and weight capacity. Height range is what gets marketed hardest, but it’s the least likely thing to bite you. What actually goes wrong with a dual monitor setup on a converter is running out of flat surface, or asking a 20 lb platform to hold two 24-inch monitors plus whatever arm or stand they’re sitting on.
If your two monitors sit directly on the converter’s upper deck with no separate arm, add up their actual weight — most 24-27 inch monitors run 8-14 lb each — and compare that against the platform’s rated capacity, not the total unit capacity, if the spec sheet splits it out. A platform rated for 20-25 lb starts feeling tight with two mid-size monitors on it. That’s the exact problem with something like the Stand Steady X-Elite Pro, which I didn’t rank here: its single platform tries to serve as both monitor shelf and keyboard deck, its capacity sits around 20 lb, and it has documented pinch-point issues when lowering. It’s a fine single monitor riser. It’s not the pick for two screens.
If instead you’re running your monitors on separate VESA mount arms clamped to the desk itself — not sitting on the converter at all — then width stops mattering nearly as much, because the converter is only holding your keyboard, mouse, and maybe a laptop. Depth matters almost as much as width
A wide but shallow platform still crowds two monitors together because you need depth for the monitors to sit back far enough from your face at standing height. The Vari VariDesk Pro Plus 36 is nearly 30 inches deep, which is the roomiest in this group, and it shows in how much space you actually get to spread two screens apart instead of stacking them edge-to-edge. Shallower platforms — anything under about 20 inches deep — will force your monitors closer together than is comfortable, especially if you’re also trying to fit a keyboard tray in front.
Stability at height is the thing nobody publishes numbers for
None of these converters come with an independently measured wobble rating — nobody publishes one, and I’m not going to invent one. What I can tell you is that two-leg mechanical risers are more prone to flex at full extension than four-point steel frames, and adding the weight of two monitors near the top of a fully-raised converter is exactly the load case that exposes wobble. If you’re tall and plan to use the converter at its maximum height every day, lean toward the heavier steel-and-laminate builds like the Vari or Ergotron units over particle-board options, purely because more rigid materials flex less under a top-heavy load.
Keyboard tray realities
Every converter in this category makes a trade-off between deck size and keyboard tray usability. Wider decks meant for two monitors sometimes shrink the keyboard tray or make it non-tilting, which is the specific complaint attached to the FlexiSpot M7L. If you’re consistently running two monitors plus a laptop, a dock, and peripherals, at some point a converter starts feeling like it’s fighting its own size limits. I also read through independent testing write-ups like BTOD’s converter rankings where they exist, because that’s about as close to real comparative data as this category gets — I haven’t put a tape measure or a scale on any of these myself, so treat the verdicts as informed, not lab-proven.
