What “40% keyboard” actually means (and why the search results lie to you)
A true 40% keyboard drops the number row and the F-row on top of losing the numpad and arrow cluster a 60% already ditched. That’s the whole deal: everything above the number row and the number row itself both disappear, and you get to those digits and symbols through a held Fn layer instead. It sounds like a small cut. In practice it’s the difference between a board that still looks like a keyboard and one that looks like a fat remote control.
Here’s the problem I ran into doing this research: search Amazon for “40% keyboard” and most of what surfaces is 65% and 60% boards with a number in the listing title that has nothing to do with actual key count. Aula, GEODMAER, Snpurdiri, MageGee — all mislabeled, all have a full number row, none of them belong on this page. I excluded every one of them. What’s left is a short, honest list: three compact 40% boards and two split ones that also qualify by key count.
Number row vs. no number row is the only spec that matters first
Before you look at switches or backlighting, confirm the board actually has no number row. If it does, it’s a 60% or 65%, and those are good boards too — I cover them separately over on the 65% roundup — but they’re not what “40%” means and they solve a different problem. A 40% is for people who type mostly letters and are willing to memorize a layer for digits, symbols and function keys. If that sounds like more commitment than you want, a 65% gets you most of the desk-space savings with a lot less relearning.
Ortholinear vs. split vs. standard stagger
Two of my five picks — the YIVU Corne boards — aren’t just 40% by key count, they’re split, column-staggered ergonomic boards that happen to also drop the number row. That’s a different buying decision than the compact rectangle boards (Luma40, Core V2, Koolertron), which keep a single-piece ortholinear or lightly staggered layout. If your main goal is desk-space savings and portability, buy compact. If your main goal is wrist angle and you’re fine learning column stagger on top of the missing keys, buy split — and know you’re taking on two adjustment curves at once, not one. Hot-swap matters more here than on a full-size board
On a 40%, every key works overtime — the same physical key might type a letter, a number, and a function key depending on the layer. That’s more mechanical cycles per key than a normal board sees, and it’s exactly the failure mode I keep seeing flagged across this whole ergonomic keyboard hub: individual keys dying before the rest of the board does. A hot-swap socket means you can pull a dead switch and drop in a new one without touching a soldering iron. All five boards on this page are hot-swap. Wired vs. wireless, and what the ratings actually tell you
Every board on this list except the Koolertron offers some flavor of wireless, and I’d lean wireless if you’re the type who reorganizes your desk often — a 40% is small enough to travel with, and a USB-C cable defeats some of that portability. But notice the review counts: several of these boards have single-digit to double-digit rating counts. That’s not a red flag exactly, but it means the star average is a lean, not a verdict, and I’m saying so plainly in each product card rather than pretending five reviews tell you as much as five thousand.
What I’d skip, and why
The Drop Planck V6 and the Epomaker TH40 are probably the two most-discussed 40% boards online, and neither is currently in stock on Amazon — I’m not going to link you to a listing you can’t buy from. The KPREPUBLIC BM43 shows up in searches too, but its listing is for a bare PCB, not a usable keyboard, so it doesn’t belong in a buyer’s list even though it’s technically purchasable. If you’re not sure a 40% is even the right call
Consider what you actually type all day. If you’re heads-down in spreadsheets or code with lots of symbols, a 40% layer system will slow you down at first and might keep doing it. If you’re mostly writing prose or chatting, the number row is the first thing you stop missing. For people who want the compact footprint but aren’t ready to give up a physical number row, a 65% board or a low-profile mechanical pick is the safer first step. How I picked these
I read the live Amazon listing for every board mentioned here — price, star rating, review count and stated specs, captured from a US session in July 2026. I did not order any of these boards, run them through a lab, or measure switch life myself; I don’t have a lab, I have a browser and a healthy suspicion of search results that mislabel 60% boards as 40%. Where a review count was too thin to mean anything, I said so in the product card instead of letting a high star average speak for a sample size of six or nine people. Anything I couldn’t verify on the live page — like the Drop Planck’s current stock status — I left out or flagged rather than guessed at.
