What backlighting actually buys you
Backlit keys solve exactly one problem: seeing the letters when the lights are low. That’s it. It doesn’t change your wrist angle, doesn’t make the switches last longer, and doesn’t make a mediocre keyboard ergonomic. If you work in a well-lit office or you’re a touch typist who never looks down, save your money and put it toward a better desk lamp instead — that fixes the actual visibility problem and does double duty for video calls.
Where backlighting earns its keep is the founder working past dark with one lamp on, or the team that keeps the office dim on purpose. In that setup, being able to glance down and confirm you’re on F and J, not D and K, is a real convenience. Just don’t let RGB glow talk you into paying more for a keyboard that’s otherwise a downgrade.
Membrane vs mechanical backlit
Most budget backlit boards, like the ProtoArc and Arteck here, use membrane switches under the light — fine for typing, cheap to make, and the usual failure mode in this category (a dead key or two after a few months, per Amazon’s own review summaries) shows up here same as everywhere else. Split, fixed-split, or straight

A few backlit boards worth knowing about have a real problem: not enough people have reviewed them yet for the star rating to mean anything. The Freestyle Edge RGB Plus sits at 23 ratings, the Kinesis mWave at 18, and the Truly Ergonomic CLEAVE at just 8 — a 4.2 or a 3.8 built on that few reviews is closer to a coin flip than a verdict. I won't tell you to spend extra just because a keyboard glows in the dark, not if the rest of it is mediocre. Too many listings lean hard on "RGB" while treating build quality and switch feel like an afterthought—that's a gaming keyboard pretending to be something real, which isn't what this guide is about.
