What you’re actually buying when you buy a ‘docking station’
Under one search term, Amazon sells three different products wearing the same name. There are real Thunderbolt docks, which use one cable to carry video, power, and every peripheral at full speed. There are plain USB-C hubs, which do the same job over a slower standard for a lot less money. And there are DisplayLink docks, which fake extra monitor outputs using software instead of a dedicated video connection. They all get called a docking station on the product page. They are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one is the single biggest reason this whole category has so many mediocre star ratings.
Start with your laptop, not the dock
The most common return story in this hub has nothing to do with the dock’s build quality. It’s a MacBook owner buying a dual-4K dock and getting one working monitor. Base M1 and M2 Macs only drive one external display, full stop. The base M3 does two, but only in clamshell mode with the lid shut. It’s not until base M4 and M5 that you get two monitors with the lid open. None of that is the dock’s fault, and no dock can fix it — check your exact chip before you buy anything, especially if you’re shopping for a whole team of MacBook docking stations. Windows laptops have their own limits too, usually tied to the integrated GPU, so check the laptop spec sheet either way.
Thunderbolt vs USB-C: do you need the expensive port?
Thunderbolt docks cost more because the standard genuinely does more — higher bandwidth, faster external storage, and generally steadier multi-monitor behavior. If your laptop has a Thunderbolt port and you’re plugging and unplugging daily, it’s worth paying for. If you’re mostly stationary at one desk with two monitors and don’t care about squeezing out every bit of bandwidth, a plain USB-C hub does the same practical job for a fraction of the price. I’d rather see a small team buy five of the cheap Anker hubs than one Thunderbolt dock and four unhappy people waiting for a restock.
DisplayLink: the honest tradeoffs nobody puts on the box
If you need three or more monitors and your laptop doesn’t have the ports or GPU grunt for it, DisplayLink is the real answer — docks like the Anker Prime DL7400 use it to fake extra outputs. It works, but it comes with real costs the listing photos don’t show: it needs a driver install, it runs on your CPU rather than your GPU (independent testing has put this around 15% CPU just moving the mouse, more when dragging windows), it won’t play protected video like Netflix or Prime Video, and it caps out at 60Hz — skip it entirely for gaming, video editing, or CAD work. None of that means the dock is broken. It means DisplayLink is a different product wearing a dock’s clothing, and buyers who don’t know that going in are exactly why this sub-category’s ratings sit lower than everything else here.
The cable is usually the real problem
A dock that randomly drops a monitor or won’t charge at full speed is, very often, not a dock problem — it’s an uncertified cable problem. Look for ‘Intel Certified’ for Thunderbolt cables or ‘USB-IF Certified’ for USB4 cables; a title that just says ‘for Thunderbolt’ without either certification is marketing language, not a spec. Swapping a $20 certified cable fixes more dock complaints than returning the whole $300 unit does.
Ports, power, and what to actually check on the listing
Count your real peripherals before you count the dock’s ports — most people need fewer than they think. Watch the power figure closely: some listings quote a marketing wattage and a separately certified charging wattage, and the certified number is the one that matters for actually charging your laptop. And check whether a charger is included at all — several budget hubs, including two of Anker’s own, spell out ‘charger not included’ right in the title, meaning the wattage listed is pass-through capacity for a brick you already own, not a supplied one.
Beyond the dock itself

I worked from a single research pass reading live Amazon listing pages — prices, star ratings, review counts, and the specs manufacturers state on their own product pages — not from a lab, and not from Amazon’s review text, which loads client-side and wasn’t accessible in this pass. Where a price or rating wasn’t confirmed on the actual product page, I left it out rather than guess. I did not bench-test throughput, charging speed, or CPU load on any of these — the one CPU figure mentioned above comes from a named outlet, Tom’s Hardware, not from me plugging anything in. A few products that show up constantly in older docking guides — the Kensington SD5700T, the Dell WD22TB4, the CalDigit TS4, an Anker ‘777 Apex’ that doesn’t exist on Amazon at all — are missing here on purpose, because they’re either out of stock, superseded by a current model, or never existed as a real listing in the first place.
