What DisplayLink actually is, and why the box doesn’t say so louder
Most laptops can natively drive one or two external monitors through their built-in graphics, using USB-C alt mode or Thunderbolt to send a real video signal out. DisplayLink skips that entirely. It’s a chip inside the dock that takes a compressed video stream over plain USB data, and a driver on your laptop that decodes it and paints the screen. That’s the whole trick behind a dock that promises three or four monitors off a laptop with exactly one video-capable port. It’s clever, and it’s also the reason this hub’s DisplayLink docks sit lower on the star-rating scale than almost anything else I cover — not because they’re badly made, but because they’re doing something your laptop’s graphics card was never asked to do.
The driver is not optional, and that’s where most of the anger starts
Every DisplayLink dock needs software installed before the extra monitors do anything. Anker says so directly in its own dual-monitor dock listings, and it’s the single biggest source of one-star reviews across this whole product family. Skip the driver, plug in, and you’ll get a black screen or a low-res mirror and conclude the dock is broken. It usually isn’t. Download the driver from the dock maker’s site before you plug anything in, restart once it asks, and most of the reported problems disappear.
What DisplayLink costs you that the box doesn’t mention
Three things are worth knowing before you buy. First, DRM-protected video — Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video — will not play through a DisplayLink output; the copy protection blocks it, and no driver update fixes that. Second, it runs on your CPU rather than your GPU, and independent testing from Tom’s Hardware found roughly 15% CPU load just moving a mouse around on a capable mobile Core i5, with bursts of 20-30% when dragging a window between screens. On an older or lower-power laptop that overhead is more noticeable. Third, there’s a 60Hz refresh ceiling and visible lag with fast motion, so gaming, CAD and video editing are the wrong use case entirely — DisplayLink is built for spreadsheets and email, not motion graphics.
When to skip DisplayLink and buy native instead
If your laptop has a Thunderbolt port, you almost never need DisplayLink. That single fact invalidates more dual-monitor dock purchases than any dock spec ever will, DisplayLink included.
The cable is usually the actual problem
A dock that randomly drops a monitor or won’t charge at full speed is very often running on an uncertified cable, not failing on its own. If you’re feeding one of these docks over USB-C, use an Intel Certified or USB-IF Certified cable rather than one that just says “for Thunderbolt” in the title — that phrase alone means nothing about certification. It’s a $20 fix for a problem that gets a lot of otherwise-fine $150 docks returned.
Who each pick here actually suits
If you need three monitors and your laptop genuinely can’t do it any other way, the Anker DL7400 or either Plugable model above are the honest answer — buy one, install the driver, accept the CPU overhead as the price of admission.
