What actually matters for photo editing
Refresh rate, RGB backlighting, curved panels — none of it matters much if you’re editing photos. What matters is color gamut coverage (how much of the visible color spectrum the panel can show), panel type (IPS and IPS Black hold color better off-angle than cheap VA panels), and resolution (more pixels means finer detail when you’re zoomed into a crop). Everything else on a typical monitor spec sheet is there to sell you something, not to help you nail a skin tone.
sRGB vs DCI-P3, and whether you need either
If your photos end up on the web, in a portfolio, or in most print shops, 99% sRGB coverage is genuinely enough — that’s the Dell 27 Plus 4K and it’ll do the job at a lower price than a DCI-P3 monitor. DCI-P3 is a wider gamut used mostly in video and high-end print, and it’s what you’re paying extra for on the UltraSharp U2725QE. If you don’t know which one your workflow needs, you probably need sRGB, not DCI-P3 — buy the cheaper one and put the difference toward a better chair.
4K vs 1440p for photo work
4K gives you more real screen space to see fine detail without constantly zooming, which matters more for photo editing than for spreadsheets or email. All three of my top picks here are 4K for that reason. I’d only step down to 1440p if budget is the deciding factor and you’re mostly working with images that don’t need pixel-level scrutiny — in that case a 1440p monitor like the ViewSonic VS2725-2K is fine for general office use, though I don’t have a verified color-gamut spec for it, so I’m not calling it a photo-editing pick specifically.
Portable monitors as a second screen
If you’re editing on a laptop away from your desk, a portable monitor with a decent sRGB spec — like the ARZOPA above — gives you a real second screen for histogram-and-preview workflows without hauling a full desktop monitor. Don’t expect factory-level color accuracy out of the box; treat the stated gamut number as a ceiling, not a guarantee, and calibrate if a client’s paying you for exact color.
What to ignore
High refresh rates (120Hz, 144Hz) are a gaming and video-editing spec, not a photo-editing one — a static image doesn’t care how fast your panel refreshes. RGB backlighting on a monitor or light bar is nice for the desk, but it does nothing for your color grading; if you want good lighting for the room itself without color-shifting your monitor, that’s a separate purchase, and I’ve covered office lighting and monitor light bars elsewhere on the site.
Mounting and desk setup
Once you’ve picked the panel, how you mount it matters more than people expect for long editing sessions — eye strain from a monitor that’s too low or too close will wear you out faster than any spec sheet issue. How I picked these
I went through Amazon’s own listed specs, star ratings, review counts, and — where Amazon renders one — the review-derived “Customers say” summary block for each monitor. I did not test any of these in person, I don’t have a lab, and I won’t act like a spec sheet number I can’t verify is a measurement I took myself. Where a product’s review base was too thin to trust — the BenQ PD2706QN at 23 ratings is the clearest example here — I said so instead of hiding it behind a strong star average. Where I didn’t have complaint data, I said that too, rather than inventing a downside to sound thorough.
