What “the right monitor height” actually means
The rule of thumb is simple and it’s not a myth: the top of your screen should sit at or just below eye level when you’re sitting up straight, and the whole display should be roughly an arm’s length away. The fix costs nothing: weigh your monitor without the stand — most manufacturers list this in the spec sheet — and buy the arm whose stated range brackets that number. Don’t buy the beefiest arm you can afford on the assumption that more capacity is safer. It isn’t; it’s the opposite problem.
Height on office monitors themselves
Some monitors ship with height-adjustable stands built in, which can remove the need for a separate riser or arm entirely, depending on how much lift the stand offers. What to ignore
Skip the marketing language about “ergonomic certification” on riser boxes — there’s no standard body issuing that certification for a $15 steel shelf, it’s just a word on packaging. Also skip any arm listing that leads with weight capacity in big bold numbers and nothing about the minimum: that’s usually the sign of a listing optimized for search, not for the actual buyer’s monitor.

My research pulls from Amazon's own data—the star ratings, review volumes, and the automated complaint summaries Amazon pulls from verified customer reviews—along with official specs from manufacturers about weight capacity and VESA mounting.
