Weight is the whole game
An ultrawide monitor is longer and usually heavier than a standard 24-inch panel, and every gas-spring arm on the market is rated for a weight range, not a maximum you can just aim under. Buy an arm rated way above your monitor’s actual weight and the spring won’t have enough resistance to hold position — it’ll drift upward on its own. Clamp, grommet, or fixed stand
A clamp mount is fast to install and easy to move to a different desk later, but it needs real edge access — no drawer lip, no rounded edge, nothing in the way. A grommet mount needs a hole (existing or drilled) and tends to feel a little more rigid once a long panel is fully extended, which matters more with ultrawides than with small monitors because the leverage on the joint is greater. VESA compatibility isn’t usually the problem
