What “duplex” actually buys you
A duplex document scanner reads both sides of a page in a single pass through the automatic document feeder (ADF). That’s it — no flipping the stack halfway through, no re-feeding, no guessing whether page 14 got scanned backwards. For anyone doing invoices, contracts, or intake forms with printing on both sides, that single detail is the whole reason to pay for this category instead of a cheap flatbed. If your documents are almost always single-sided, you don’t need duplex and you’re wasting money on it — a basic flatbed or a printer-scanner combo will cover you fine.
ADF duplex vs. flatbed vs. all-in-one printer
Dedicated ADF scanners like the ones above are built to move paper fast and reliably, which matters once you’re feeding stacks instead of single sheets. A multifunction laser printer with a scan bed, by contrast, is usually simplex-only or duplex-slow, and it’s optimized for printing first, scanning second. Color vs. mono, and why it’s not always obvious

Epson and Canon rely more on TWAIN and ISIS drivers, which do the job but have that feel of tools from fifteen years back.
