The phrase gets used for three unrelated tools: an iodine pen that reacts to wood-pulp paper, a UV light that reveals a security thread most cashiers have never actually looked for, and a battery-powered box that reads magnetic ink and infrared patterns and blinks a light. They aren’t tiers of the same product. A $99 automatic detector doesn’t replace a $9 pen — it checks different things, and sometimes checks them wrong.
An iodine pen tells you whether paper is wood-pulp based. Genuine US currency is cotton-linen, so a yellow-to-brown mark reads “probably fine” and a dark streak means stop and look closer. What no pen catches is a bleached genuine small bill reprinted as a larger denomination — the dominant modern counterfeiting method. Save the automatic detector for a back-office desk — bookkeeping, a bank run, a nightly count — where someone has thirty seconds per bill and wants a second opinion, not a front-of-house verdict.
What to ignore
Ignore “detects 99.9% of counterfeits” style claims — none of these listings publish a tested accuracy figure, and I’m not inventing one to fill a spec box. Ignore review counts in isolation too: some detector families on Amazon pool a single rating across genuinely different models sold at very different prices, so a big number next to a cheap unit sometimes actually belongs to a pricier sibling. Where I couldn’t confirm a rating was specific to the exact model, I left it blank rather than guess.
