What “home safe” actually means for a small business
Most buying guides for safes assume you're a homeowner stashing jewelry and legal documents. That's not what founder-types usually need: you're typically securing business formation paperwork, a passport or two, maybe a backup drive or a cash drawer from a weekend pop-up, and you want it accessible in the office or a dedicated work-from-home space β not locked in a bank safe-deposit box. That shift in priorities changes what matters on the spec sheet. You don't need maximum internal space, but you do need to know if that fire rating actually means something, if the locking mechanism will hold up after regular use, and whether the whole unit can squeeze under or beside your desk without becoming an eyesore.
The fire rating is the part almost nobody explains correctly
This is the single most useful thing to understand before you buy anything in this category. UL Class 350, one hour is the real paper-protection standard: the unit goes into a furnace up to 1700F and the interior has to stay under 350F for a full hour, because paper chars and ignites around 400F. That’s a tested, third-party-verified claim. UL94 V-0, by contrast, is a plastics test β it measures whether a material self-extinguishes within 10 seconds on a vertical sample. It says nothing about interior temperature or protection duration, and the same marking shows up on ordinary plastic cable raceways. Floor safe, chest safe, or document box β which one do you need
Document boxes and small chests (the SentrySafe 1160 and HD4100 in this list) are built for paper and small electronics β a passport, a drive, a folder of contracts. They’re cheap, light enough to grab in an emergency, and honest about their limits. Digital keypad vs key lock
Neither one is obviously better β they fail differently. A key lock has no batteries to die, but the key itself is now the single point of failure; lose it and you’re calling a locksmith or drilling the thing. A digital keypad avoids the lost-key problem but depends on batteries and a mechanism that, on the cheaper end of this category, some buyers report getting stuck or unreliable over time. I’d skip anything advertising a temperature figure without naming a UL classification behind it β that’s a marketing number, not a test result.
