Spiral, coil, same machine — the pitch is what actually matters

Same plastic coil, same 4:1 hole pattern on nearly every listing here, same manufacturers using both words in one title because that’s how people search. If a page tries to sell you a meaningful difference between the two terms, it’s guessing.
The distinction that actually costs you money is pitch — 4:1 versus 3:1. Every machine in the table above is 4:1, which is the standard for spiral/coil binding and covers the vast majority of what a small office needs. A 3:1 machine (like the Rayson wire binder, which is a different animal entirely — it uses double-loop wire, not coil) cannot use 4:1 coil, full stop. Buy the wrong pitch and your coil supply is useless. If you already have coil sitting in a supply closet, check the pitch printed on the packaging before you order a machine.
Punch capacity is the spec that actually predicts your daily experience
Everything else on a spec sheet — disengaging pins, margin settings, coil range — is secondary to how many sheets the machine punches in one stroke. A 12-sheet punch (like the budget MAKEASY) means an 80-page report becomes seven separate punching passes, each one needing careful alignment so the holes actually line up. A 20-sheet punch cuts that to two or three passes. If you’re binding more than a few documents a week, the difference between 12 and 20 sheets is the difference between a two-minute job and a fifteen-minute one.
Disengaging pins matter for a narrower reason: they let you punch a half-size document (say, a letter that’s only 30 holes wide) without wasting holes or misaligning the coil. If you only ever bind full Letter-size documents, this spec barely matters. If your office produces odd-sized handouts, look for a machine that advertises 46 disengaging pins rather than a fixed set.
What to ignore

Coil’s real advantage over comb is that it lets a document lie completely flat or fold back on itself — useful for training manuals or anything that gets propped open on a desk while someone works from it. Comb is cheaper per-document and marginally faster to punch, but the spine doesn’t fold flat. If you don’t know which one you need, that flat-lay behavior is the deciding question, not price.
